The Understudy is a dazzling comedy by Theresa Rebeck about an uphill effort to stage the Broadway premiere of a newly discovered Franz Kafka masterpiece. Professional and personal lives collide during an understudy rehearsal, when the woman in charge finds that her ex-fiance has been cast as the understudy. Throw in a stoned lightboard operator, an omnipresent intercom system, and producers threatening to shut down the show and the big question becomes: Will—and should—the show go on?

THEATER BY THE BOOK is our series of informal play readings.
Now in our 11th Season, we schedule five or six readings throughout the year and present a wide range of works. The director and actors come together and rehearse for a short time; there is no scenery, no costumes, and minimal staging. Check us out and expand your theatrical horizons!
